Can't log in after update, no grub

Using Kubuntu 13.04 which was updated today, on reboot I was unable to get past login i.e. enter password then nothing. Tried login in using ctrl alt f1 but login in fails even for root. I have
also tried grub for recovery mode but unable to get into grub, using shift. Any advise woud be appreciated.
