ubuntu 12.04.3
removed samba, screen black for 10 mins.
reset box, boot hangs @ purple screen.
700GB video project not backed up yet.
scared! please help.

Terminal codes:

cat /etc/fstab
cat /etc/mtab
mount

to point us in the direction to look.

where there are solutions there are no problems

Sorry to be so terse earlier, but my keyboard layout of choice was not an option in the Ubuntu CD version. I was told through other channels to use the "something else" option in the install. So Ubuntu is reinstalled and I can access my files. Problem solved, sorta.

That can be a good thing ! Now I expect you have 2 installs and dual booting.
Can trouble shoot the primary operating system at leisure and a convenient means to access the primary system; looking to see how samba is mounted.
And now as well you have a backup system !

if it ain't broke, you have not tweaked it enough
