VERY Slow Printing from Applications

(Ubuntu 12.04, Brother HL-2270-DW printer) When printing from an application like firefox or acroreader, it takes FOREVER to print pages, but if I print to a .ps file and then cat the file through lpr, printing is VERY fast. While waiting for printout from an application, the printer status window shows "processing" - sometimes for hours.

Reads like a driver problem. What are the pc specs ?

It's the same on two different PCs, one is an Acer desktop, the other an HP laptop.

I don't understand why it would be a driver problem if it prints fine by sending a postscript file directly to the printer (lpr). It sounds more like a cups problem to me.
