How do I upgrade my super old ubuntu version to latest?

Hey ubuntu forums, I'm wondering is it possible to update from ubuntu 10.10 to the newest ubuntu from an iso file on my usb 2GB drive? The desktop computer don't support usb though, Or will i have to install the iso to a CD-R?

Wow michael14, I just started searching for exactly the same.......
I have a feeling that it's going to be via usb boot disk or cd with the version you want to install, As natty is now considered and old-release.
Had to replace the sources.list with the http://old-releases.....

If the computer is too old for booting from USB it's also too old for a recent Ubuntu.
A fresh install of Lubuntu 13.04 is a good option.

Here is the computer's specs: Amd athlon 2400+ XP, 512mb of ram, VIA-S3 accelerated graphics processor. We like ubuntu a lot, because it looks easy to use.

Hi,

if the machine does not allow booting from a USB port then you cannot use an ISO image in a USB memory stick. Sorry. Another issue is the size of the CD-R disk. The images of the newest versions of Ubuntu are too large to fit on some CD disks. For example, if you go here and download PC (Intelx86) desktop CD it will download 12.04.2 at 693MB. It will run on an AMD Athlon. That is not the issue. How well will 12.04.2 run on that graphic processor? That is the question.

Now compare those sizes with 12.04.3 which is more than 1Gb in size. And the download size of the very latest - 13.04 is 794MB. Which is why I am pointing you to 12.04.2.

The graphics card is by far too weak for Ubuntu, but as I mentioned Lubuntu is an option. You could also try Bodhi (link in my signature).

Best is to begin with a live boot.

the 10.10 look is also found (sort of) in Xubuntu. Xubuntu 12.04 has alternate disk that can be used to install the OS from CD i believe.

otherwise you can use plop boot manager (it fits even on a floppy disk) to boot from usb.

in your case Lubuntu (1st) or Xubutnu (2nd)are a better choice. or Bodhi. unless you can increase the ram.
