Desktop larger than viewable area? (Ubuntu 12.04, Radeon 5850)

I'm getting ready to swap parts from an existing system into a HTPC-specific case. When connected via HDMI to my 27" ViewSonic monitor, everything was perfect. When I moved the system to test on my 50" Panasonic Viera TV via HDMI, the desktop screen is bigger than the viewable area so menu bars are off the screen. When I go into Settings>Displays, I note that Ubuntu thinks it is a 32" monitor and have to use a resolution of 1280x720 just to catch the edges of the menu bar.

My system specs are posted below. I'm doing some searches and have found a couple ideas I may try but many of the threads appear to be unsolved. If this problem sounds familiar, I would appreciate any help!

    Thanks!

    System specs:
    Case - Silverstone LC13 USB3.0 (ordered)
    Mobo - Gigabyte EP45-UD3P v. 1.1
    Processor - Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz
    PSU - Corsair HX620W
GPU - HIS Radeon HD 5850 (for now - considering going fanless)
SSD - Kingston HyperX SSD 120GB (run the OS and applications)
    Optical drive - LG Blu-ray
    RAM - Corsair 4GB DDR2 1066
    HDD - TBD
    TV tuner - TBD

It's called overscan. You can generally fiddle with it in your telly or driver settings.

Solved - I tried one of the FGLRX hardware drivers and that appears to have fixed it. I'm still playing but picture quality seems good.
