Ubuntu 12.04 LTS lxde vs lubuntu-desktop

I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed. I want to play with Lubuntu/LXDE.

I understand that support for Lubuntu expires in October.

Would I better better off to install lxde instead of lubuntu-desktop to keep support past October?

    Thank you.

Lubuntu 12.04 was not a Long Term Support version. It is indeed only supported up to October 2013. But how much support do the LXDE.org give to LXDE? Is it easy to install on Ubuntu 12.04? Or will it be better to download and install Lubuntu 13.10 when it comes out at the end of October and get support for another 18 months?

You say you want to play. Then install the lubuntu-desktop. You will get an option at the login screen to load either into Ubuntu (Unity) or Lubuntu.

    Regards.

No matter how long Lubuntu 12.04 is supported it only means that security bug fixes are provided. There are few or no fixes related to broken functionality (of which 12.04 has a lot).

    I would recommend Lubuntu 13.04 or 13.10.

Although I have heard lubuntu 14.04 is planned to be a long term support release although you might get impatient if you want to wait that long and still have a LTS.

Installing the lxde session would give a bare bones lxde trial experience with a lot fewer packages than the Lubuntu desktop . The session is easily removable as well , but it brings the open box session along with it .

Sounds like a toss up. I ended up installing lxde and have the panel, wallpaper, and keyboard shortcuts they way I like them. I have tried gnome-fallback, gnome, xubuntu and find them too slow. Hoping lxde/lubuntu on top of Unity will be a sturdy workhorse for me.

I have an install of 13.04 also, and will upgrade it when 13.10 comes out.

    Thanks for the comments.
