    Ukash Malware infection

    Hello

Ok, so ive contracted this stupid malware and im a noob.
so here are prob all the standard details. When i was redirected to the site, and un-allowed to close the window, i was unsure what to do so i just shutdown the machine. Now my browser wont connect to the internet even though im connected to the network.

Im running ubuntu 12.04 64bit. firefox. On a Hp laptop. As far as i know i dont have any virus protection (i thought linux didnt need any specific virus protection) and i am running java. two things i now know i need to change. After some searching I found this thread and posted on it during my initial frustration.

I tried installing ClamAV through helpcentre, terminal and terminal in safe mode by typing "$sudo apt-get install clamav clamtk". none have seemed to work.

Helpcentre and terminal cant download/install the various packages.

In safe mode i got this message-

W: not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib.dpkg/lock
E: unable to write to /var/cache/apt/
E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened

I dont know what that means.

Im typing this on a friends mac. im a uni student and I need internet connection badly. can any ubuntu guru's help me fix this a.s.a.p please.

Also, can this bug spread over the network? in total four computers are connected, mine, a secod PC laptop, The mac im currently using, and i beleive a second mac.

    Thanks
    Adam

You say you are connected to a network
    OK
    So some things to try:
If you run this in a terminal, does it fetch the info:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    If it does
Try renaming the the hidden folder .mozilla to .OLD-mozilla
    Now try Firefox
    Ubuntu 18.04

so i typed that into terminal and a lot of "get ... ", "hit ..." and "ign..." messages for Http links appeared. i dont know how i should interpret any of that. Their were seven 'Gets'.
i assumed that by something appearing, was what you meant by 'if it does'. so i changed the .mozilla hidden file located in home to .OLD-mozilla. Firefox doesn't open now. i click on the shortcut and it flashes, but then nothing.
Did i do something wrong or do you need more info?

    HEY HEY. success!
So after my last post i restarted my computer normally. ubuntu told me their were several errors. i pressed 'f', asking ubuntu to fix the errors.
Now firefox opens and seems to be connecting fine. What does this mean? should i delete the '.OLD-mozella' file? is their still a virus on my computer?

    Thanks carl4926

    You can delete the OLD-mozilla
Unless you need a copy of your bookmarks

It's likely that the issue was confined to that old folder. Renaming it, creates a new .mozilla once you launch FF
    Ubuntu 18.04
