Does "not working" mean that it's missing from the Applications menu?
In working with *nix...There be dragons. Newcomers: I recommend reading Linux is Not Windows (http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm) and The Linux Command Line (http://www.linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php) before beginning your quest for a better OS.

    Task manager?
    Are we discussing Ubuntu?
AFAIK Ubuntu doesn't have a traditional task manager, the top right panel uses indicators.
Look here for help on getting the Skype indicator up
    http://askubuntu.com/questions/28623...kype-indicator

And Ubuntu applications menu is now the dash, that's the button on the top of the icons on the left side bar.
It looks like the Ubuntu logo.

You should have posted that you are using gnome-shell/classic in the first place.
It would save others time posting solutions for unity, which wouldn't help you.
As far as panel and other extensions
    https://extensions.gnome.org/

I do not know whether or not these work for the classic layout.

You'll have to decide that yourself.
The nifty thing about the gnome extension website, is that all you need to do, if you are using gnome shell, is just click the switch from off to on and the extension is loaded on your desktop.
No need to install it like other programs.
And if you don't like it, then just turn it off.

The of course only works if your desktop is shell.
I've never tried it with classic.
