Volume control in toolbar not working - all other volume controls fine

    Hi

When I try to change the volume via the toolbar option in the top right (next to the clock on Unity, 13.04) it won't work - whether I drop down and click mute, drop down and drag the volume control or try to use the scroll wheel. This has happened at my work computer too. Is this a known issue?

Everything else works fine - if I go to the sound option via system settings or use keyboard shortcuts I have no issue.

Any ideas as to what the issue could be?

    Thanks in advance

Edit - actually, nothing from the drop down menu is working - I can't pause things, open sound settings, etc

I've got almost the same problem. The sound menu in the toolbar becomes completely non-functional. This seems to frequently happen after the computer wakes up from sleep. The only way I know to fix it is to log out and back in. All my other toolbar icons work though, and I can still adjust the sound through keyboard shortcuts and the system settings. I am running Ubuntu 13.04.
