    Authentication

Hi am trying to get rid of some software on my linux. I am new to this, but I am getting this message - "An application is attempting to perforn an action that requires privileges. Authentication is required to perform this action." I can not take something from my Software Center (remove it) without it letting my know that it needs the password. When I give the password it still will not remove the software.

Can anybody out there help me?

    Re: Authentication

What software are you trying to remove? Does it give an error message at all?

Removing software will always require a password.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

I am not getting a error message. I am just told that this is not the write password... try again.

Linux is case sensitive, so that could cause the rejection.

Check your caps lock. You can always remove what you own. So, if the p/w is right, you must not own what you're rfemoving.

    Re: Authentication

For some reason your entry is not matching your login password. You can try copy and paste of the password and that will guarantee no errors within that dialog.

Sorry, right now every time i am trying to take something out or put it in it has asked for my password. This may have started when i tryied to put Xampp in. I have played around with the passwords and they wont let me take anything in or out.

    Re: Authentication

Then you aren't using the right password.

Do you have to supply password to login? It's that password.

If you've set it to autologin then I'd just reset the password - http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword
