If I watch a YouTube video, the RAM Spikes big time

    This is odd....

If I watch a YouTube video, for example, a few mins after a cold boot, everything is fine and it just idles away....

After a few hours of working, say with Firefox, Thunderbird and other apps and then I watch a YouTube video the machines really suffers and the RAM takes a huge hit. Result is that the video renders terribly.

Could this be a /tmp cache issue? What is your hunch with this? I have 4 GIG RAM and 8 GIG SWAP - that shoudl be enough.

    Thanks

Only a youtube Video? and RAM spikes? not CPU?
What version of firefox are you using, could be a memory leak? Does it also happen if you use another browser?
