Toshiba dual boot problem win8 13.04 : Stuck at boot manager error

System; Qosmio x70, 8gb ram, 1 tb hdd, win8 preinstalled. In windows I partitioned 200 gb for ubuntu or other system. Have been following all options related to:http://askubuntu.com/questions/22183...uefi-supported, and now am stuck. I got the files to load to partition, I can see them, on restart I get the option for win8 or ubuntu. selecting ubuntu gives the boot manager error w/ missing or corrupt file: wubildr.mbr, error 0xc0000007B.
Combing this forum for the last 2 days and have yet to discover any solutions to get beyond this, yet. Help! Thanks in advance.

Did you originally install wubi?
As stated in the link and the Ubuntu download page wubi does not work on pre-installed Windows 8. Actually the issue is any system with gpt partitioned drives.

Okay. I have formatted E: drive (ubuntu destination) so no wubi exe. I now have linux secure 13.04 iso on live usb, burned by LiLi usb creator. Also, boot repair, which I could launch in Virtual Box. Got the following report: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6037111/ . Greek to me.
Secure boot currently disabled; in all my trials,I've always been able to boot to windows, but not to ubuntu.
Wubi is gone completely, Partition E: is formatted.
When I boot to either usb (boot repair or secure 13.04) I get the grub screen w/ Try,Install,Install OEM,Checkdisk options. When I click any of those screen goes grey/dark and then completely black after a momentary flash.

Should I delete partition and leave space unallocated? Then try again?
Not sure about running programs in virtual box. Should I try that and click recommended repair?

Keep in mind that I have no alternative way to connect and, so, am being extremely cautious. (I do have recovery media for system!)

BootInfo report only shows flash drive, but no hard drives?

Is this an Ultrabook? And what video system. You may want to review detailed info in my signature.

But black screen is most often a video issue and most of those then work with nomodeset. If booting in UEFI mode you get grub menu, not accessiblity screen. From grub menu press e for edit and scroll down to linux line. Replace splash quiet with nomodetset.

This shows screenshots of BIOS install screens, and then grub after install. But with UEFI you also get grub on install screens but may have to add nomodeset after install or until nVidia drivers are installed.

oops PS bootinfo came from inside virtual box.

With dual video that does create some issues. nVidia requires nomodeset boot option, Intel is supposed to work but some also need settings with the newest Intel video. And with dual video you need bumblebee.

Success! nomodeset got me in. Now I need specific help w/ partitions. I can see the partition I want to use, then confusion, lack of experience. Do I make it efi or ntfs, either way I get error saying no root system detected (forgot to write it down) fix in partition area. There is 108 mb unallocated space in front of the partition.

Any pointers?

Always use Windows to shrink the Windows NTFS partition and reboot so it can update to its new size. It will want o run chkdsk. But do not use Windows to create new partitions as it may convert to dynamic partitions which do not work with Windows.

How you partition is dependant on what you may want to do. Even my own optimal partitioning plan is obsolete a year or two later.

For the Total space you want for Ubuntu:
Ubuntu's standard install is just / (root) & swap, but it is better to add another partition for /home if allocating over 30GB.:
Only if gpt - all partitions in gpt are primary:
gpt: 250 MB efi FAT32 w/boot flag (for UEFI boot or future use for UEFI, you only can have one per drive, so if already existing do not attempt another)
gpt: 1 MB No Format w/bios_grub flag (for BIOS boot not required for UEFI)
for gpt(GUID) or MBR(msdos) partitioning
Ubuntu partitions - smaller root only where hard drive space is limited.
If total space less than about 30GB just use / not separate /home or standard install.
1. 10-25 GB Mountpoint / primary or logical beginning ext4(or ext3)
2. all but 2 GB Mountpoint /home logical beginning ext4(or ext3)
3. 2 GB Mountpoint swap logical

Depending on how much memory you have you may not absolutely need swap but having some is still recommended. I do not hibernate (boots fast enough for me) but if hibernating then you need swap equal to RAM in GiB not GB. And if dual booting with windows a shared NTFS partition is also recommended. But you usually cannot create that as part of the install, just leave some space. Or partition in advance (recommended).
One advantage of partitioning in advance is that the installer will use the swap space to speed up the install. Thanks Herman for the tip.
