HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

Now i do not have windows with me, only ntfs partitions left over from the previous windows installation.

Hi Givré, I tought to ask the specialist himself,

I installed ubuntu dapper with default Gnome desktop a while a go, I have an external drive that I didn't want to reformat in ext3 or fat 32 because of the data on it.
I followed your thread to add ntfs-3g and it worked perfectly.
Recently I installed the KDE desktop, it coexists with the Gnome desktope, I can choose wich one to use at login.
Now when working in the KDE desktop, I can only read from the drive. I tried changing the permissions so I would also get write and execute access, but each time it says permissions can't be changed, it's a read only drive.
I installed again ntfs-3g but now from within KDE, ofcoarse it said ntfs-3g is already installed.
If I log in to Gnome everything is still working as before.

any advise? Are there other people who experienced problems when having two desktops installed?

Just installed the driver (via synaptic, installing ntfs-3g and the three(?) dependent packages) and the drive is mounted and readable. However I'd also like to obtain writing permission. I'm aware that above its said that ntfs-3g does not allow for this, but is there any other way to do so?

Duli -- Please see the title of this thread, it says read/write support , if you have followed the post you already have read/write support on your NTFS.

The drives are supposed to show up on my desktop? I read followed the instructions but I get nothing on my desktop (using edgy).

You might have switched off the default "drive icon visible" option. To turn it on again go to System tools > Configuration editor. In configuration editor, in the Left pane Apps > Nautilus > Desktop >, in the right pane you will see the various options.

i mounted the partition as read only and added it to the fstab,
then yesterday i tried installing ntfs-3g using your guide but nothing happend when i tried running the automatic version.. now today when i rebooted my machine the drive was gone.. and when i try

sudo mount -a

i get this

$LogFile indicates unclean shutdown (0, 0)
Failed to mount '/dev/hdb1': Operation not supported
Mount is denied because NTFS logfile is unclean. Choose one action:
Boot Windows and shutdown it cleanly, or if you have a removable
device then click the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the Windows
taskbar notification area before disconnecting it.
Or
Run 'ntfsfix' on Linux unless you have Vista, then mount NTFS with
the 'force' option read-write, or with the 'ro' option read-only.
Or
Mount the NTFS volume with the 'ro' option in read-only mode.

what should i do i have alot of data in that HD that i dont want to loose
