Just open synaptic, search for ntfs-3g, select it, click apply.

Give you a GUI and everything, under Applications->System tools.

You don't have to touch the terminal.

That's how I finally did it. --and I wish someone told me about that before I ended up thinking it was all complicated, too ;( Maybe somewhere they did and I missed it...

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

Thanks for the guideline. It seems to work, but I can mount and unmount my external HD only as su. If I am not in the su mode, and if I try to mount the device in nautilus, then always the "you are not privileged to mount the volume" message appears.

How can I give access rights to the drive automatically?

I tried to do the following:

    /dev/sda1 /media/MUGEN ntfs-3g uid=1000,gid=100,umask=0000 0 0

    following the instructions at:

    http://www.swerdna.net.au/linhowtontfs.html

I am pretty sure about the uid, but less sure about gid...

    Could somebody offer some advice?

    Thanks, Stefan

PS. Sorry, I did not read all the 100 pages of this thread... I was a little bit too tired to do so after having read a lot of other pages.

Seems to work now. Don't know what the problem was first. I removed all the manual configurations that I did and I stick to the automatic configuration.

    ATTN givré

    Hey givré,

Your method worked for me partially. I have 3NTFS partitions (lets name them A, B & C), over 2 HDD's (A on HDD1, B & C on HDD2). Now with your method partitions A & B worked, but not C. Partition C was always weird from the beginning. Like, whenever I start-up Ubuntu, I have to double click on it in 'Computer' to mount it, only then I can view the contents. And I have to do this every time I reboot Ubuntu. And partition C never showed up on the list of available partitions while installing Windows or Ubuntu.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks!
