    btw i got ntfsfix working, i unmounted all NTFS partitions and then ntfsfix worked. but i get another error message when trying to enable ntfs-3g. it tells me to change the fstab line so it says ntfs-3g default,force 0 0. i do so and remount all drives and i can see them but all there are no files on them (there should be) and i still got no write permission.

    Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

    I've an external USB harddrive that won't automatically mount when plugged-in. Did in Edgy. Didn't in Feisty. Instead displays the popup:

    CANNOT MOUNT VOLUME.
    Invalid mount option when attempting to mount the volume "Mediagate".

    I have selected "Mount removeable drives when hot-plugged".

    In an xterm, "pmount-hal /dev/sde" works perfectly. Read-Write access. Nautilus quickly displays the directory.

    So... What do I have to do to get pmount-hal to do its thing automatically?

    Question Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

    Hi.

    I just started to linux 2 week ago, i have experienced a lot problems trying to read my Windows partition. The point is that when i try to

    sudo apt-get update

    always i got a failed

    err http://ntfs-3g.sitesweetsite.info/ubuntu/ edgy main main-all packages 404 was not found

    at the end say

    some index files failed to download

    I have tried many times to do this but i always get the same.

    thanks.

    ok i got to the "fakeroot apt-get source -b ntfs-3g" step and there was no .deb package.

    "draconicronin@shadowstalker:~$ fakeroot apt-get source -b ntfs-3g

    I typed in libfuse wrong ok fine:

    Ok, so i know fuse 2.6.3 installed properly because of "Setting up fuse-source (2.6.3-0givre2)..."

    so why wont ntfs-3g install?

    Did you run ntfs-config? I did on my NTFS winxp partitions:

    #Entry for /dev/hda5 :
    UUID=28944736944705B2 /media/windata ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0
    #Entry for /dev/hda1 :
    UUID=C440F40940F40448 /media/winxp ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0

    For my one-partition 320GB Seagate:

    UUID=25250D0C14CF746F /media/backup ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0

    Again, ntfs-config put them in /etc/fstab for me, with read and write access. My only problem is USB external drives.

    If you started two weeks ago, why are you looking for edgy files? It should be feisty. Or, if you have the latest ubuntu, available October 18th, gutsy. And, if your running gutsy, you don't need a special repository for NTFS-3G. What does your .etc.apt/sources.list look like (omit all lines starting with "#"?

    Angry Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

    hi.
    I have a Dapper Drake Server installation.
    I tried to follow your instructions in order to write on my external USB NTFS drive, but I couldnt since when I try to install the customized packages from your repository dapper main-all I get the following error message:
    pmount:
    Dépend : libc6 (>=2.4-1) mais 2.3.6-0ubuntu20.5 doit être installé
    Dépend: libdbus-1-3 but it is not installable
    I get a message telling me to upgrade the distro
    So, the drive gets mounted when plugged in, ntfs-config is set to activate writing, but it doesnt. I ran ntfsfix, I ran chkdsk on DOS, so I assume the disk is ok.
    If it can help to know, trying to boot with the latest ghost4linux which entails ntfs-3g, i couldn't write in it either.

    thanks for any help you will provide.

    404 errors mean that the requested file doesn't exist. It's a problem with that repo. Perhaps they dropped Edgy support.

    You're missing libfuse-dev, as the error message says. fuse-source and libfuse-dev are different packages. That's why they have different names.

    Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

    Will this work for a share on a Windows server?

    I have a laptop running Edgy and a desktop running XP. I want to be able to mount My Pictures so that I have access in Picasa.

    The install of NTFS-3G went fine...Thanks

    Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

    Hi,

    I have win 2003 server and ubuntu server
    dual boot.

    I am having a problem with ntfs-config -
    Last time i used it, i just used the GUI version
    which worked perfect,
    I reinstalled ubuntu, and installed ntfs-config again.
    Now when i start the gui version i can only mark the external drives
    check box, and not the internal which is the one i really need.

    How can i overcome this?

    Thanks,
    Eitam.
