Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

The howto is regulary update, see the last update date

Edgy don't have the latest driver in universe, simply because after the release, we can't update like that.
So i provide a repo where i put the latest driver. That what mean :
" if you want the latest driver" :
And to use it, use one of this mirror :
    Code:
    deb http://givre.cabspace.com/ubuntu/ edgy main
    deb http://ntfs-3g.sitesweetsite.info/ubuntu/ edgy main
    deb http://flomertens.keo.in/ubuntu/ edgy main
For removable device, the modified pmount is in an other componnement of the repo, so to use it you have to use on of this mirror :
    Code:
    deb http://givre.cabspace.com/ubuntu/ edgy main-all
    deb http://ntfs-3g.sitesweetsite.info/ubuntu/ edgy main-all
    deb http://flomertens.keo.in/ubuntu/ edgy main-all
If you think the first page is not enough clear, you can suggest some change.

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

Many thanks Givré for your reply. I'm very sorry for wasting your time. To me the Howto is very clear and great but an earlier message I read seemed to be meaning you didn't have to do what is written in the Howto.

    I suppose I was mistaken.

Nevermind, I'll stick to your great howto -- congratulation on your good work! This ntfs-g3 driver and your repositories look fantastic. I can't wait to test ntfs-g3 on other people's (as I don't have Windows) computers (on a test partition first).

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

Some time ago I had a problem with a driver mounted with ntfs-3g, but I don't really know if the problem is related to it, although everything points to ntfs-3g.

I use dosbox to emulate a older clipper application that is located in my NTFS partition. One day, I found out that a database file (that has many accesses to read and write frequently) was missing. There is no way I could have deleted that on my own, it must be a flaw or in ntfs-3f or in dosbox, but I surely can't guarantee where, and neither can I replicate the problem, since it occured once in months...

I wanted to know if is there any bug you have corrected that may be the cause of this problem of mine, because after this episode, I stopped using dosbox to use this program as I may waste some work if that file deletes himself once again.

Hum, first, there is not known problems of that type presently.
There were a bug in the first version of ntfs-3g that could corrupt data when renaming some types of files,
but that was fix the 11 august 2006:
    Code:
fix: directory couldn't be renamed if it had both WIN32 and DOS name
What version did you use ?

Also, if it is ntfs-3g that caused that kind of things, it will leave an error that can be detect by chkdsk. Did you run it just after your problem ?

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

    Hello,

I have installed ntfs-3g following this how-to (exactly the translation from doc-fr !) and I have a little problem : when I copy a file which is above around 100mb from a ntfs partition to another ntfs partition (no problem with ext<->ntfs) the transfer is getting slower and slower so that it sometimes can't even finish ! I have tried with the original ntfs-3g package from Edgy Eft and with the one from givre's repo (same for fuse even if it seemed to be the same version).

Am I the only one ?

I've seen similar things for 1GB-files, from ext2 -> ntfs-3g. Not every time, but sometimes. Might have been fixed after loading the disk in Windows a few times.

Bapman, some users report the same problem, but apparently, when you do it by command line, it works fine.Don't know if it's something related to nautilus .
You can try also with konqueror.

Exclamation Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

Hello. I'm a new user in linux world and ofcourse in ubuntu's. I have installed ubuntu desktop 6.10. After installing unbuntu my extern usb hard drive (3 ntfs partitions) were mounted but the ntfs partition from my notebook hard drive wasn't mounted so i mounted it with
    Code:
    mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /media/C
. Everything good until now. I installed ntfs-3g, umount /dev/sda1 partition and remounted it
    Code:
    sudo ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /media/C -o allow_other,uid=1000
I made a test and it worked. The problem is that when i restart my notebook /dev/sda1 is mounted again but i can't write anymore so i have to umount and remount it every time. What can i do.
The second problem is that my external hard drive doesn't apear in fstab, can i mount it with ntfs-3g?
This is my fstab file. I have acces to write on /dev/sda1 now
    Code:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
    # /dev/sda5
    UUID=3692bcb0-99b4-469a-acdd-225d38c4d213 /               ext3    defaults,errors=remount-ro 0       1
    # /dev/sda6
    UUID=8acf8c8d-ba40-4529-86d8-55fd21107054 none            swap    sw              0       0
    /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
    /dev/sda1 /media/C ntfs umask=0222 0 0

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

Ok, first, for your notbook hard drive, you should change your fstab to mount it with ntfs-3g (did you read the howto ).
So like i suggest, you should change :
    Code:
    /dev/sda1 /media/C ntfs umask=0222 0 0
    by
    Code:
    /dev/sda1 /media/C ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0
Of course, you can adjust your locale.

For removable, they should'nt be set up in fstab, fstab is for static device, removable one are handle automaticly. Unfortunatly, the application who do that don't support actually ntfs-3g, so to use it, you'll need a modified one that i provide in my repo. Just add that line to your /etc/apt/sources/list :
    Code:
    deb http://flomertens.keo.in/ubuntu edgy main-all
Of course all those instructions are on the howto, so i suggest you to read it first, and if you have further question, ask them, i'll be happy to reply you.

Wink Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

I read the "how to" from the first time but then I read the second post when someone wrote that everything was working without any configuration so I forgot about the "how to" Thanks for helping me.
I changed the fstab file. I can't find /etc/hal/fdi/policy/15-ntfs-policy.fdi . In policy I only have preferences.fdi . I checked in Synaptic Package Manager and hal & pmount are installed.
    Again thanks for helping me.
