Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using the ntfs-3g (easy & safe method)

    Hello,
I've justed installed ubuntu 6.10 on a old Dell PIII.
Main HD is a 40Gb disk where the system resides.
The PC has also an 160Gb second drive NTSF used for backup.
    I followed the procedure, but...
But after installing the NTSF package, I get a message (in Dutch):

    j@<name of the computer>:~$ sudo apt-get install ntfs-3g
    Pakketlijsten worden ingelezen... Klaar
    Boom van vereisten wordt opgebouwd
    Reading state information... Klaar
E: Kon pakket ntfs-3g niet vinden

This means: couldn't find package ntfs-3G!
So... the install and updates went fine, but one way or another the package doesn't install.

    Any idea????

    http://ntfs-3g.sitesweetsite.info/ was updated this morning.
    All will be OK now.

    allcazar,
    1. For the official edgy package, you'll have to enable universe.
    2. For the latest version of ntfs-3g, don't forget to add one of this mirror in your /etc/apt/sources.list:
    Code:
    deb http://givre.cabspace.com/ubuntu/ edgy main
    deb http://ntfs-3g.sitesweetsite.info/ubuntu/ edgy main
    deb http://flomertens.keo.in/ubuntu/ edgy main
    MilesTEG1, many thanks

EDIT : This will be fix soon.
    Hello givré,
I installed Ubuntu Edgy 64-bit and I cant find your instructions for the 64 bit ntfs-3g installation any more, which I got here on this thread some when in September .
I remember it had something to do with the kernel.
I would be happy if you would find the time to to tel me again what I have to do.
    Thank you in advance

Hi cariboo, ntfs-3g is now in the ubuntu repository, just enable universe, update your package and search for ntfs-3g.
I also put an amd64 section in the first post, you might look at it, but for edgy, you don't need to do special things (except for removable device)

Hi givré, and many thanks for answering so quick!!!!
This is the original sources.list I have right now:
    ## Original /etc/apt/sources.list November 2006
    ##
deb http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ edgy main restricted multiverse universe
deb-src http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ edgy main restricted multiverse universe

    ## Major bug fix updates produced after the final release of the
    ## distribution.

    deb-src http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ edgy-updates main restricted multiverse universe

    ## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'universe'
    ## repository.

    ## team, and may not be under a free licence. Please satisfy yourself as to
    ## your rights to use the software. Also, please note that software in

    ## team.

    ## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'backports'
    ## repository.
    ## N.B. software from this repository may not have been tested as
    ## extensively as that contained in the main release, although it includes
    ## newer versions of some applications which may provide useful features.
    ## Also, please note that software in backports WILL NOT receive any review
    ## or updates from the Ubuntu security team.

    # deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu edgy-security universe
    # deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu edgy-security universe

Are these the ones I should enable? Or should I get a new sources.list generated by Automatix??

    You have everything needed.
    Just do :
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install ntfs-3g
    And that's should be ok.

    Hi givré,
and congratulations for your excellent work and this great tool.
During installation on Edgy 64-bit everything went exactly as you described it in this very detailed HOWTO.
If you have a wish list, please send me an e-mail.
May be see you again here.

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

Do you mean the universe repository has the very latest version of ntfs-g3?

    I understood Edgy required:
    Code:
    deb http://givre.cabspace.com/ubuntu/ edgy main
    deb http://ntfs-3g.sitesweetsite.info/ubuntu/ edgy main
    deb http://flomertens.keo.in/ubuntu/ edgy main

    deb http://givre.cabspace.com/ubuntu/ edgy main-all
    deb http://ntfs-3g.sitesweetsite.info/ubuntu/ edgy main-all
    deb http://flomertens.keo.in/ubuntu/ edgy main-all
And for removables the howto (page 1) says you're supposed to have a modified version of pmount from your repositories.

It would be great to update the howto (first page of this thread) because no one can actually go through the 92 pages to find the latest change All very confusing! or else you could update the page in Ubuntu help https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mo...dowsPartitions

    Thanks for this great stuff!
