When I mount through fstab and use the mount -a, I get the error
"Failed to access '/dev/sda1/': Not a directory"

But it mounts perfect with the command
    "sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /windows"

    Any ideas why?

    Thanx!
    Can i see your /etc/fstab ? thanks.

Please boot into Windows TWICE, or use the 'force' mount option.

Now i do not have windows with me, only ntfs partitions left over from the previous windows installation.
Add the force option for your ntfs partition in /etc/fstab

I followed your thread to add ntfs-3g and it worked perfectly.
Recently I installed the KDE desktop, it coexists with the Gnome desktope, I can choose wich one to use at login.
Now when working in the KDE desktop, I can only read from the drive. I tried changing the permissions so I would also get write and execute access, but each time it says permissions can't be changed, it's a read only drive.
I installed again ntfs-3g but now from within KDE, ofcoarse it said ntfs-3g is already installed.
If I log in to Gnome everything is still working as before.

any advise? Are there other people who experienced problems when having two desktops installed?

    regards Tom
Under kde, try to create files on your external device with the terminal : should be in /media/usbdisk.

Since Feisty is around the corner, I'm now wondering if the changes made in the instruction in this thread will cause problems when upgrading to Feisty. Do you have to change anything before upgrading in order not to run into problems during the upgrade?
'Don't break dist-upgrade' is one of my goal, so that's why i always try to be as near as ubuntu developpement as possible.
But ' Make the thread obsolete' is also one of my goal, and that's why you'll not need additional repository under feisty, all will be available in universe.

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

    Hi Givré,

Thank you for all these good instructions... However, I still have a problem when trying to mount my USB disk. I am under Ubuntu 6.10 - the Edgy Eft, amd64 and want to mount a NTFS disk as read/write, so I followed these instructions http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...95#post1647295
but now, I cannot mount my disk anymore.

    I tried pmount-hal /dev/sda1:
    mount: unknown filesystem type 'ntfs-3g'
    Error: could not execute pmount

I am really sorry if someone already asked that, I couldn't find it... I don't understand why ntfs-3g is unknown whereas I guess I am edgy?

    Thank you very much

Are you sure you have ntfs-3g install ?

    Writing to external Hard Drives

Hi, just wanted to say great guide! worked like a charm for me.

I wanted to suggest that you might want to consider adding to the guide the following:
On step 2 after executing the
    Code:
    apt-get upgrade
The system might show this warning:

    Code:
WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated!
      pmount
Do not worry about it and upgrade it. Not ugrading pmount will not allow you to have WRITE access to external drives.

I didn't do it (freaked out) and couldn't write later on to my external drive. After I upgraded it worked flawlessly

    This guide will also help.
