Thread: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

I followed the instruction in this thread some time ago and it works fine for my external HDD. Thank you !

Since Feisty is around the corner, I'm now wondering if the changes made in the instruction in this thread will cause problems when upgrading to Feisty. Do you have to change anything before upgrading in order not to run into problems during the upgrade?

    Hello.

I was able to add the source to my sources.list file and I was also able to do an update.
However, i am not able to connect to the server.

Is it a temporary problem with the servers or have i mssed something. I dont think that I have since I have added the french server to my repo list and also the update doesnt show a problem abt authentification or whatever.

    Hope to hear from you,

    Aijaz.

As far as fiesty it works great for an internal hard drive.

Now my question. I have an external hard drive. I saw about the pmount you have provided but from what I saw its only for amd64s? Im sorry if I missed something but this thread is HUGE!!!! Could you please tell me how to get it working under regular 32bit?

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

Hm, this is a loong thread, so sorry if this has already been answered.
When I mount through fstab and use the mount -a, I get the error
"Failed to access '/dev/sda1/': Not a directory"

But it mounts perfect with the command
    "sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /windows"

    Any ideas why?

    Thanx!

Thanks, I just got my USB external hard drive to work (read & write) using these intructions, The NTFS Config Tool (Menu: Applications--> System Tools --> NTFS Config Tool), works for me.

Also it's a great bonus not to have to boot into Windows partitions if I need something, there all available on my desktop now.

    givré,

You may want to update this how to for Feisty Fawn. As I write this I'm setting this up in Feisty. There is no longer a need for Step 2. All the ntfs-3g is in the universe repository for Feisty.

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

    plz help

can u please give me idiot derections to one of the options:
    $LogFile indicates unclean shutdown (0, 0)
Failed to mount '/dev/hdc1': Operation not supported
Mount is denied because NTFS logfile is unclean. Choose one action:
Boot Windows and shutdown it cleanly, or if you have a removable
device then click the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the Windows
taskbar notification area before disconnecting it.
    Or
Run 'ntfsfix' on Linux unless you have Vista, then mount NTFS with
the 'force' option read-write, or with the 'ro' option read-only.
    Or
Mount the NTFS volume with the 'ro' option in read-only mode.

    ta,
    Nolander
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install ntfsprogs
    Code:
    ntfsfix /dev/insert dev name here
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install ntfs-config
Then you have a nice and easy gui under Applications> System Tools All you have to do is click enable and bam your done

so how reliable is ntfs support in ubuntu now? i have so much stuff on my external hdds but only a quarter of it backed up. are there any chances of losing data or is ntfs just as reliable now as etx3?
