Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

I just need to get some files off an ntfs drive... I followed the instructions...
    installed ntfs-3g
    edited fstab
    rebooted

and when I do a sudo mount -a, I get the following:
    Code:
Error opening partition device: No such file or directory
Failed to startup volume: No such file or directory
Failed to mount '/dev/hdc1': No such file or directory
here are the results of sudo fdisk -l | grep NTFS
    Code:
Disk /dev/md0 doesn't contain a valid partition table
Disk /dev/md1 doesn't contain a valid partition table
Disk /dev/md2 doesn't contain a valid partition table
    /dev/hdc1 1 36483 293049666 7 HPFS/NTFS
    and here is my fstab
    Code:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
    /dev/md0 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
    /dev/md1 /home ext3 defaults 0 2
    # /dev/sdc1
    UUID=12b5e3a2-0088-4646-b80e-1e7a446fa210 /mnt/storage    ext3    defaults        0       2
    # /dev/md2
    UUID=645c52d8-c538-4a44-b7be-3a5fb485dd3a none            swap    sw              0       0
    /dev/hda /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
    /dev/ /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0
    /dev/hdc1 /media/windows ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0
    please help! thanks in advance.

You seem to have an ASUS A8N-SLI which has a fakeraid: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto

What's the output of 'dmraid -ay' and 'dmraid -s'. Can you see a mountable device in /dev/mapper after the previous commands? What ntfs-3g version do you use?

can you tell me how to do both of those? what commands? thanks (sorry)

EDIT: I should also mention the NTFS drive is hooked up via IDE and not SATA which is where the 'fakeraid' is... hope that helps...

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

Last time I had ntfs-3g installed it lasted for about 16 hours and then the filesystem when corrupt due to a software freeze that I had to reset to unknot! I have no indications or proof that it was due to the ntfs-3g-install though, so now I have a new fresh install of edgy followed the instructions in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...55#post1918655 to install ntfs-3g and all went well. I modified the fstab and restarted the system, however it does not work.

I have everything mounted properly and can read from the ntfs-disk without a problem, however if I try to create a file I get input/output error:
    "touch test
touch: cannot touch `test': Input/output error"

ive tried in console both as super-user and ordinary. I have also tried to moe files through interface.

To make matters more confusing I managed to delete files on the ntfs-disk though...

    Any ideas?

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

Hello guys, sorry for responding in late, i was really busy those last days.

kanzie, i don't like this input/outpout error, i think the best would be to directly report your problem on http://forum.ntfs-3g.org/ szaka will support you better than i can do. Thanks.

kapilg_it, you can install the latest version of ntfs-3g via my testing repo (for edgy only) on :

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...55#post1918655

    violin,
    Code:
    /dev/hdc /media/cdrom-1 ntfs-3g silent,umask=0,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0
Is totaly wrong, you configured your cdrom drivre to use ntfs-3g and not your ntfs device.
Can i see the output of 'sudo fdisk -l'. Thanks.

Givre you are awesome. After much baning my head against the wall, I found your post, and it could not have been easier to get my external ntfs drives working so that I could write to them. You saved me the agony of formatting a 500GB drive, then putting all the backed up music off of it back on . All tha music is on over 500 CD's and DVD's. It would have taken me weeks. Thanks to you it took about 20 minutes.

I followed it step by step and I could not get it to work. The only thing I could find off is that when I get to the part that tells me to

    PHP Code:
    sudo apt-get install ntfs-3g
I do that and it gives me

    PHP Code:
    ECouldn't find package ntfs-3g
    Is that supposed to happen?
