    Stumped by choice

I tried to install the restricted extras software (because it sounded like something I might need) and it said I had to remove two libav library packages first. But I don't want to remove something I might need for something I might not need. Any guidance?

The regular libav libraries are removed in favor of libav-extra libraries, which are identical except they support more codecs (some legally questionable to distribute in draconian countries that acknowledge software patents). You're not losing anything.

When I started to remove the old libraries, it told me I also had to uninstall VLC, too. What's up with that?

it will probably reinstall a new version of vlc libraries. vlc has some codecs built in i believe. anyway likely similar case as answered above.
