    Shobuz99; Humm ..
Maybe I am not passing the proper argument to the command ?

    rick@rick-desktop:~$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ehoover-compholio-lucid.list
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ehoover/compholio/ubuntu lucid main
    rick@rick-desktop:~$
    lets try:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get autoremove --purge ehoover/compholio/ubuntu
    worth a shot

    Shobuz99'

Quite frankly .. I am at a loss presently ..still look'n about .. see what I can learn.

    are these files present ?
    Code:
    ls -ls ~/.netflix-desktop
    ls -la ~/.wine-browser
We have not done much .. as much as we have tried ...there is nothing "to go back to"; still trying to find a means to (un)install netflix with out compromising Wine.
Think'n 'bout trying to find old documentation on how Netflix may have been installed ... reverse engineer it ?

gotta be a way to do it

Re: Persistant problem with system update/software center

    Shobuz99;

Sorta stumped right now ...as Netflix is not a ubuntu package, highly doubtful that dpkg tracks it or will have any info on what related packages might be installed... how to look and see what the dependencies are - is on my mind - ....

My research to this time has not yielded a better solution than what has already been tried ...

How bout we remove the ppa entry from /etc/sources.list.d/ directory ... and run the update/upgrade routine -> see what results and what effects happen to Wine ??... Sure do not want to mess around with "~/.wine-browser"; That is Wine.

Removing that source may get a stable operating system ... just do not know what orphan files would be left laying around. I can not see any harm in removing that source, particularly with the thought of (re)installing Netflix.
    OR
(re)install Netflix and then remove Netflix with "ppa-purge" ?? The way it is supposed to work ...

I am tired and going to sleep on it !

Re: Persistant problem with system update/software center

    Ok. here's what I did:

    1) I created a tmp folder named /Downloads/ehoovertmp.
Then I copied the "ehoover-compholio-lucid.list" file to that folder, just in case I need to put it back.
    2) I deleted the "ehoover-compholio-lucid.list" from the /etc/apt/sources.list.d by using this command:
    Code:
     sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ehoover-compholio-lucid.list
    3) Then I ran the update command. Here's those results:

    Code:
     rick@rick-desktop:~$ sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ehoover-compholio-lucid.list
    rick@rick-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update

No errors! This is good correct?
Now as an extra added step, I tried running Update Manager to see if there were any problems.
The result was the attached image.

My question is, should I select a "Partial Upgrade"??

    Thanks

Re: Persistant problem with system update/software center

    Shobuz99; Morning !

I am thinking about how best to proceed ... and yeah .. that last is a positive thing overall.. specifically however.. partial upgrades are to be avoided, until such time as we know what is involved.
To that end... you have a old source file for google-chrome in the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ directory . Is that another failed install or are you using google-chrome ?

    For now let's see what the package manager has to say about what it wants to update;
    Code:
    sudo apt-get upgrade
and tell the package manager NO when asked to "continue" ... will get a good indication of what the package manager is going to do.
Post the output back and we will see what we might be able to do.

In the mean time, I am still seeking a reason why Netflix is being such a problem to remove.

    inquiring minds want to know

Re: Persistant problem with system update/software center

ok. The google-chrome source file can be removed. I actually un-installed Google Chrome, a while ago..
hmmm.. maybe that's part of the problem...??? I think I used Synaptic to uninstall it...I hope I did. Geesh!
Anyway, I want to remove it, so should I proceed to do that?
    I'll use:
    Code:
    sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list.save
    Ok?

Here's the results of the upgrade attempt:
    Code:
    rick@rick-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get upgrade
    [sudo] password for rick:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
E: The package wine-compholio needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.

Re: Persistant problem with system update/software center

    Shobuz99; Yeah...

    try:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get purge google-chrome-stable
    ##and then
    sudo apt-get autoremove
assuming that "stable" is what was initially installed.
    - and then delete that google-chrome file -

And -> still going round and round with Netflix, huh ??.. still appears to be the only hold up. I continue to look for an alternative rather than installing it .. just so we can use the recommended manner to remove it ...
I have found that the "wine" associated with Netflix is not associated with the normal install of Wine.... that to me a good thing and relieves a lot of pressure.

In the event I do not come up with that better solution .. prior to (re)installing, there are a few thing to find out about your system /// again will cross that bridge when we come to it.

Not in bad shape at all ..
where there is a will there is a way
