    nVidia MCP 55 SATA and MSI interrupts

    Hi,

    I have installed Ubuntu 13.4 64 bit with latest updates on a HP xw9400 workstation.

    This platform uses the nVidia nForce 3600 professional chipset, in a nutshell it basically is an nForce MCP55 chipset based SMP / NUMA AMD Opteron platform. Currently it is configured with dual Opteron 2389 processors and 16GB of RAM (not that this has anything to do with the problem).

    Currently i am trying to optimise the system and i have started setting up all devices where possible to use MSI interrupts. According to lspci, this device suports MSI interrupts.

    So far so good, but when configuring the nVidia MCP55 SATA controller (or more specifically the sata_nv kernel module) to enable MSI interrupts i get a 30 second timeout when booting the system with NCQ issues on the SATA controller. This SATA controller has the bootable SATA HDD attached and errors occur around the 32 second mark.

    After the NCQ issue has occured, the system completes bootup and works fine without any further issues, note that this only occurs when using MSI interrupts and initially booting up. I havent seen the kernel spit out any further errors in the dmesg log after running the system.

    Does anyone know if the sata_nv module and the mcp55 SATA controller have issues working with MSI interrupts or is there something wrong with my hardware or config? Or is there a problem with the sata_nv driver itself?

    Well i done some more investigations.

    The sata_nv module by default has swncq enabled and msi interrupts disabled by default.

    It seems that swncq mode seems to work perfectly well when running with io-apic interrupts but when switched over to enable the use of msi interrupts, swncq mode has all sorts of issues.

    So in other words, to use msi interrupts, you must disable swncq and vice versa. Therefore i assume SATA hotplug is disabled if no ncq? Am i correct?

    Could this possibly be an issue with the sata_nv driver or libata? Some sort of incompatibility with msi interrupts and swncq enabled together?

    Either way for me, it isnt really a problem. In terms of performance, the hdd benches pactically the same in either mode... But i don't like the sounds of missing out on hotplug!

    I think nvidia chipsets struggle with MSI (the ALSA devs automatically disable MSI for the sound codec if they detect an nvidia chipset).

    Thanks for the reply.

    It seems to me regarding the HDA audio, it uses the snd-hda-intel driver and it seems to be working fine on my machine with MSI interrupts so far...

    Also, using when the SATA controller is in MSI interrupt mode, it seems stable as well when running under heavy iozone benchmarks.

    In general, it seems that msi interrupts seem to work fine for me.. just msi and swncq together cause problems.

    I found something else i think that is quite interesting, one of the freebsd devs claims that when accessing one of the PCI BARS of the MCP55 SATA controller, it requires some sort of delay. I dont know exactly what is occuring, but i guess switching into swncq mode would require writing to one of the pci config space registers. Perhaps it needs some sort of delay after writing?

    Just because MSI is enabled on the storage controller, I don't think it's necessarily enabled for audio:
    HD-audio driver uses MSI as default (if available) since 2.6.33
    kernel as MSI works better on some machines, and in general, it's
    better for performance. However, Nvidia controllers showed bad
    regressions with MSI (especially in a combination with AMD chipset),
    thus we disabled MSI for them.

    Agreed,

    But i have also specifically enabled MSI for the audio interface, i.e. the snd-hda-intel module.
    I also enabled MSI for the SAS controller (which i will be using soon).
    I have the output of the /proc/interrupts in the first msg in this thread.

    Unfortunately, i cannot do it with the Quadro FX3500 (NV49) as it seems the nouveau driver doesnt support msi for this model yet.
