    12.10 / 13.04 + NVIDIA NV18 GeForce4 MX 440 + nouveau driver = gliches + freezes

    Hi,

    I have just installed lubuntu 12.10 and then dist-upgraded to 13.04.
    I am having the problem described below in both environments and from the very first minute.

    My graphic card is an old nvidia GeForce4, and the driver in use the default opensource driver for it: nouveau
    Code:
    $ sudo lspci -v
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x] (rev a4) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
    	Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 16
    	Memory at ef000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
    	Memory at f8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=64M]
    	Expansion ROM at f7fe0000 [disabled] [size=128K]
    	Capabilities: [60] Power Management version 2
    	Capabilities: [44] AGP version 3.0
    	Kernel driver in use: nouveau
    The selected resolution chosen by the system was correct: 1024x768@75

    Code:
    $ sudo hwinfo --monitor
    > hal.1: read hal dataprocess 1762: arguments to dbus_move_error() were incorrect, assertion "(dest) == NULL || !dbus_error_is_set ((dest))" failed in file ../../dbus/dbus-errors.c line 282.
    This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

    But I get graphic glitches all the time (like having menu icons and (>) losing their color randomly when moving around the alt+F1 menu), and most important, it ends up freezing the system after a couple of minutes fo use.
    I cannot post any error because they never get written in the log files. It is a major system freeze: no mouse, no keyboard, display is frozen, ctrl+alt+F1 won't give you a vterminal, no network (ssh stops, icmp stops responding), SysRq-keys do not work at all... All I can do is power cycle the system.

    From what I have read, my only option is the nouveau driver.
    The old nv driver is deprecated, and nvidia's closed driver no longer support the NV10s family cards. I could try the last version that supported my card: 96.43.23, but it needs X.Org xserver versions 1.11 and 1.12, and both ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04 are using xserver-xorg-core 1.13.

    Is there something I can do?

    My actual workaround is adding the nomodetest parameter to the kernel to have ubuntu pick the vesa driver (works fine, by the way, but limited to 800x600).

    PS.-
    It is a dual boot system, and the nvidia card seems to work just fine in the WindowsXP installation.

    Re: 12.10 / 13.04 + NVIDIA NV18 GeForce4 MX 440 + nouveau driver = gliches + freezes

    I think I'm having the same problem. Except that my system doesn't freeze up. I have the same graphics card, and I'm getting all these glitches. Mine is also a dual-boot with Xubuntu & Windows XP, and everything seems to work fine with Windows XP. Check out my post here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2222994

    Did you ever find a solution?

    Not really.
    The computer has been running lubuntu ever since but with vesa drivers, as I mention in my post, restricted to 800x600.
