I have it running on an old Dell 600m Latitude and an Acer Extensa 4620z. I have an older version of Mint on my thinkpad T43p which I will upgrade to Mate 14 or 15 when I have time.

Go with Mint or Zorin & enough said. Ubuntu is what it is & the others are doing what they want to get away from Unity. I love Xubuntu myself. But, have tried them all. It's one of the things that make Ubuntu & the Buntu's My Distro..

I'm using LUbuntu 13.04 which works great and I think I will stay with it for now. Thanks for your help.

    Thanks

yes all of those mentioned will run in live mode either on dvd or flash drive.

The only laptop i have found that any of them wont work on was an old everex stepnote. I have installed all of them at one time or another on a dell d800, a dell 6300, a toshiba, 3 different HPs
the most recent being an hp mini, an asus 1005ha, and ibm t42p and an acer aspire 1.
The only dumb question is the one not asked.

You can have a look at the Laptop Compatibility section.
I vote for Asus which I find they are more Linux friendly, the price is right, and very reliable.
I have an eeePC which I used for distro hopping.
Unfortunately Ubuntu and most of the regular distros nowadays bloat to over 4G, its maximum capacity.
