bamh1d, I was curious about the 32bit, and 64bit packages in your lists.

    ibjsb4 has a good plan.

I removed Samba4 as suggested and replaced it with Samba. Using Samba I am able to connect to shared folders on other computers in my WiFi LAN.
    And Update Manager runs successfully!
Many thanks to you, ibjsb4 and hansdown , for helping me to find my way through the wilderness.

samba is a dependency of samba4, so it's probably already installed. If it was automatically installed, a future autoremove command might unexpectedly remove it. You might want to run
    Code:
    sudo apt-get autoremove
after purging samba4, just to check.
    Jane, stop this crazy thing!

Re: yet more update manager failures

    Hansdown,
please see my earlier message and accept my many thanks for your help. Removing Samba4 seems to have resolved the problem my Update Manager had.
As far as I know, I am running a 64-bit version of Ubuntu 12.04. I used the Wubi to install a dual boot OS. The processor is an Intel Core™2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz × 2 running a 64 bit instruction set.
What 32 bit packages are you referring to?

Re: yet more update manager failures

    Glad you fixed it, bamh1d.

    ibjsb4 had it pegged.

I was looking at the i386, and amd64 parts.

I thought you might be running a 32bit install.
