64 bit 13.04 on a Flash Drive seems buggy?

Wanted to give 13.04 a test drive.

Installed it on a Scandisk flash drive as per Ubuntu instructions to make it a bootable USB stick.
All seemed well, then boot up. hit F12 and boot up off stick. 13.04 starts up and I select to try it out. 13.04 seems to runs OK but slow because of running off a stick. Noticed most features work but been getting a lot of screen freezes. Same things happens using Firefox 20. I surf somewhere, screen dims/freezes for a few seconds then runs normally. Went on Youtube for testing and clips ran, then would freeze. At one point everything locked up. Since there was no 'Force Quit' option, had to do a hard shutdown by holding the PC power button till it shut PC down. Then restarted 13.04 again awhile with the same buggy performance.

Question is, is this the way 13.04 runs or is it the result of running off the flash drive?
Never had these problems when testing a new version of Ubuntu off a Live CD.

I run the full install of Ubuntu from a flash drive and it only is a little slow more when doing writes. Once an app is loaded into RAM it is just as fast as hard drive as only RAM is really used.
How much RAM does your system have. And what video card/chip. It may be in a default minimal video mode which is not as fast also.

With my old laptop with 1.5GB of RAM I try not to load more than 2 or 3 apps at once. If I load too much or too large of apps I do sometimes have screen turn grey and I know it is using swap as that is a lot slower.

Was running 13.04 off the flash drive on my Dell i7 in my signature which has 8GB DDR3 ram. It also has a 128GB SSD as boot drive. Since using the flash drive and SSD along with 8GB of RAM, I expected it to run faster than it did but the main bugs were it freezing and locking up.

If you run the Update Manager, you'll see there have been dozens (if not hundreds) of bug-fix updates since 13.04 was released in April.

Unfortunately it is not really feasable to evaluate this with a Live USB, as some updates require a reboot. You might consider a full install to a flash drive as oldfred suggests.

If you are looking for the most stable/least buggy Ubuntu, try 12.04, which is the Long Term Support release. If you are willing to go outside the Ubuntu family, then Debian, CentOS/Scientific, and Slackware are super stable (but less beginner-friendly).

Unless you are using full install and mount hard drive you will not see any speed up, but with 8GB of RAM you should not be having major issues.
But some need the latest updates and perhaps some settings to get video. Do you just have Intel video or is this an UltraBook with dual video. That needs bumblebee as only the very newest nVidia driver has just started to support some of the features, but needs the new kernel that will be with 13.10.

If just experimenting you can download the daily 13.10, but unless you are willing to experiment and report bug issues crashes I would not suggest using it until it is released in October.

Just tried out 13.04 on a stick to see what it was like.

Am using 12.04 LST at the moment and am very happy with it.
It just runs and runs well.
