I am using a toshiba laptop that had windows8 preinstalled.
I disabled the fast startup (whatever it is called- It is gone now and I forget )
I changed the boot order to cd first usb second .
The cd just gave me agrub command line so I typed 'normal' and got a box that gave me 3 choices.
try.
install,
use live cd
If I picked either live cd or try ubuntu I got a black screen.
Then I found and changed the UEFI to disable it and it called it csm mode.
This time it showed me the correct graphics for the installer cd, and started to install.
All looked fine...
But then it hung up at loading usb module.
I pushed the power button and started again.
The cd reported that, it has wiped off the windows and sees the ubuntu os as though it were a properly installed os, but it is not.
I did it 2 more times.
It stops at the same spot each time.
I am no longer able to get to the bios pages and this machine (not mine... a friend's) is nearly unusable!!
BTW, I can use 'try' mode and because the machine is so fast, it even works like ubuntu a little.
But, I really need help.
I cannot afford to buy her a machine.
Recap
UEFI is off and csm is on
Fast startup is off
Boot order is changed
I am using ubuntu 12.04.2 64bit
thanks,
jeanna
