    Re: Ubuntu on Netbook

I have a 4 year old Gateway LT20 that is currently dual booting win xp and Ubuntu 12.04LTS 32 bit. The specs on the netbook are cpu Intel atom N270 @1.6 ghz x 2, 1 gig of memory and Intel graphics 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2. It does run Ubuntu 12.04 a little slow. But it does not run win xp fast either. They are about the same. If you want it to be snappier try Xubuntu or I think Lubuntu is the other light desktop. I would put a LTS version on though. IMHO.

Xubuntu should do fine, otherwise Fedora XFCE spin for a similar setup from a different distro house.

Herman, Have about the same specs on my netbook (Acer Aspire one) but added an additional 1GB ram. I run Xubuntu 12.04 on it and it's snappy and very reliable.
    Cheers.

    I is a Toshiba NB 505-SP0114KL
Has Dual Core Intel Atom N455 @ 1.66
    2064 Mb RAM
    Mesa DRI Intel IGD x86
    Audio HDA Intel

I have installed Xubuntu 12.04 on it. Its working but not too great. Movies are jerky. and at times some functions have lag and delay.
Any better alternative or anyway to improve performance ?

you ned to check which GPU chip is on that Atom. They outsourced some GOU chips and the partner never made linux drivers. so there are some nasty patches out there. but in any case they wouldn't work as well as in widnows.
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?

    Re: Ubuntu on Netbook

If one of the functions that lagging is Thunar file manager, that is a bug. Thunar is trying to find all your networks, or something like that, and it takes forever to load. It can easily be fixed. If it is most of the functionality, then it is most likely your graphics card drivers.

    Hi there.
    +1 on the Thunar thing.

I have an MSI Wind U180 with GMA3600 (PowerVR based) graphics chip - quite problematic IMO. (N2600, 1.6GHz Atom CPU, 1Gb RAM).
Lubuntu 13.04 32 bit runs spectacularly well on the liitle thing, far more responsive than Win 7 Starter.

Whether this continues until LTS release in 2014 remains to be seen. I remain hopeful.

    Re: Ubuntu on Netbook

The problem is in watching videos in browser (flash) and watching video in VLC. The problem is not with flash or internet, it must be somthing else, may be graphics.
For eg HD videos in VLC just can not run. Again no prob with codecs.
Though Ubuntu and its forks are my first choice but still just wish to know if there is any alternative to Xubuntu, which would be good in this case.

    Start with 12.04.
If Xubuntu will not work try Lubuntu!

    Re: Ubuntu on Netbook

Netbooks are not very good at playing video. They are passable for DVD quality, but not for anything better than that.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
