    Hard drive missing.

Hey guys, I'm a noob so bare with me.

I have a laptop that was running vista, and my step daughter used it and now it isn't working. She denies she did anything, so that doesn't help.

At first it was not loading windows, and came up with an error. Then i tried vista boot disc, and it would go to a black screen (sometimes with a cursor)

So i burnt an ubuntu live cd, and tried that, but when i went to the places/computer, it wasnt showing the windows folder. There was a windows folder in the networks folder, but it wouldn't open it.

So i tried the vista boot disc again, and it got further this time, but when i try to do a repair, it says no hard drive is there. Same when i try to do a recovery to an earlier time.

I have all my baby's photos on there, so i am desperate to recover them!!!

Any suggestions how to get ubuntu to read the hard drive? I have tried taking the hard drive out and putting it back in, to make sure it was connected okay, but that didnt help either.

    Thanks

When you booted with the live CD the disc partition you are looking for might not be called Windows, it might just be labelled "150 GB drive" or similar.
The fact that the Vista repair disc cannot find it could mean that your drive has died of old age.
What version of Ubuntu Live CD did you use?

    Re: Hard drive missing.

Thread moved to Other OS/Distro Support.

I've edited the title - unsurprisingly given that this is a support forum - everyone want's help - a title of Help Please tells people very little.

If nothing else booting with a livecd isn't going to do any more damage.

This is really a windows issue, moved accordingly.

As a first step I would reboot - go to the BIOS and check that the drive is recognised in there.

I suppose it's too much to hope that you have backups of " I have all my baby's photos on there, so i am desperate to recover them!!! "

Nothing lasts forever and not having backups of things you don't want to lose is a losing strategy - been there.

It is version 13.04, and it has no folder like that. I went through every folder it was showing, but it appeared to be all ubuntu stuff.

    Re: Hard drive missing.

Is there no listing for anything in the home folder's sidepane option "devices"?

I would second Elfy's advice and look in the BIOS.
accessing BIOS is different from machine to machine, so unfortunately help there is hard without machine model.

    Unfortunately, hard drives CAN die.
The good news, in that event, is that there are recovery specialists who can access and save the data for you.
You'll probably want to search the webs yourself for that, if it is indeed the issue.
    Big +1 for Backups, though.

Edit: So no drive in BIOS probably means(most likely) the drive is dead.

Unless you tried to install Ubuntu, I would venture to guess that's just the info on the disk used for the live session.

Could you please provide the full make & model# of the hard drive in question.

If it's not recognised in BIOS you might have some serious problems.
