    Hail and fairwell to Ubuntu

Formerly al7kz but my old username is now inaccessible since I forgot to update with my new email address. I've used & put up with Ubuntu's foibles since 5.04 but the new Unity format since 11.04 is the last straw as it's virtually unusable to me, being so cumbersome. I'll give Mint a try. Hail and fairwell, Ubuntu.

The first part, I could fix,
the last part, not so much...

Apparently not a support request, so moved to Ubuntu, Linux and OS Chat

..could probably remind them of xfce and lxde though. But yeah, if Unity was the "last straw", then probably there is too much to fix.

    @al7kx,
Good luck with your adventures. I'd also like to add "crunchbang" to the trial list of 'ubuntu-derivatives'.

    PS:
If I'm not hurting you by saying so, you should really try xubuntu if you haven't yet. It is quickly gaining the reputation of the perfect refuge for those who love their old, sleek and fast Ubuntu and absolutely hate Unity

I wish you the best. Most of us aren't Linux "biggots", so we say use whatever you are comfortable with and let's you get the job done. If that's something other than ubuntu, that's fine.

We've all been there - I've "quit" Ubuntu several times - some due to issues in the OS at that given time that were not "doable" for me, other times because of how things can get sometimes in the forums. But you know what? I've always come back

Here's hoping you use what is best for you, and maybe leave a little room for trying ubuntu, one of it's flavors or any other Linux distro. You might find yourself like me and one day say "I really should go try......"

Good luck - you're always welcome here whenever you want to be back!

If you're moving to Mint you're not going too far . Mint is very usable and is becoming more polished.

Linux Mint 14 Mate works pretty well. I have it running on 2 laptops and 2 desktops.

At least you showed great patience, hanging around since 5.04 and Unity since its inception.

I'm always curious, though, in what it is, specifically, about Unity that sparks such strong animosity in some folks.

[Mint 15 is quite nice, either MATE or Cinnamon. MATE seems a bit more responive here. The default kernel is crash-prone for some.]

I second the recommendation, but would also point out that #! hasn't been Ubuntu base since about 2009. It's now Debian based.

Re: Hail and fairwell to Ubuntu

I am using Linux Mint 15 with Cinnamon on my desktop machine. As much as I love Unity, it doesn't agree with my graphics driver.

I have Lubuntu on my secondary desktop machine and Crunchbang on my Netbook.

Download a bunch of ISOs, burn them to disk, then have a blast seeing what is out there.
Thank you for your contributions. "So long and thanks for the fish!"
