Envelope icon in the top bar

Hi all,
I recently upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 and now when I click on the envelope icon in the top bar, there is no option to read email, only Empathy (which I'm guessing is an instant messaging client?). How can I integrate an email program into the envelope icon on the top bar? Thanks in advance.

some changes have been done with the newer release : less icons, but now hud/launcher is your friend, and you can add the favorite apps to your list for quick opening. Note that notifyosd will popup if you get a new mail.

I don't know if it applies to upgrades, but I had to open Tbird to activate the indicator/icon,
