Unhappy Maverick won't start ... No required device detected for unity

I have Ubuntu Maverick and after some tweaking with Ubuntu tweak I lost the ability for unity to start past the logon screen and name popups. After that I get an error saying unity cannot start..No required devicerdetected for unity. I tried to download gnome3 to bypass the whole unity thing and that didn't start either. What can i check to see what's wrong with Unity? I am able to work only from the terminal screen. I used a live cd to test the system and all the videos drivers were listed passed except for the xrandr-cycle test. thanks in advance!

Re: Maverick won't start ... No required device detected for unity

Ubuntu 10.10 reached end-of-life in April 2012 and is no longer supported. As such the repositories have been taken off-line and it no longer receives any security updates or bug fixes.

Although you a free to attempt to keep using it if you wish you're going to find it very difficult to get an answer to your question as no-one has been using it for over a year now, so all of the information relevant to 10.10 will have been mostly forgotten.

I highly recomend backing up any important data and doing a fresh installation of a version of Ubuntu that is still supported such as 12.04 or 13.04.

I agree with Cheesemill, maverick is super duper dead.
And any Unity packages for maverick are also dead, and most likely buggy and unstable.
    If you like unity, upgrade.

+1 to backup what you want.

I am aware that Maverick is no longer supported but the age of my laptop and its limited disk size does not allow for larger updated versions. I will have to stay with Maverick or a similar size distro until the machine gives out.
I thought general problems might still be ok to deal with.

How'd you get unity on it in the first place?
Was this the netbook edition that came with unity, or is from a ppa?

I suggest you try Xubuntu 12.04, or maybe Lubuntu 13.04.

Lubuntu 12.04 was not LTS therefore only has another 2 months support, hence my choice of 12.04 for xubuntu only and 13.04, or maybe 12.10, for lubuntu.

You can always look to upgrading through a mini install
