laptop won't boot without live disk

I am running 10.04. When I boot my laptop it seizes after the very first screen. If I reboot with the live disk, go on line then restart without the disk my machine will boot properly.
Does anybody know how I can avoid this tedious situation?

I can't solve your problem but I think now is a good time to think about upgrading. 10.04 is more than 3 years old and if I'm not mistaken, the desktop version is already End-Of-Life.

Then use a different interface: Kubuntu, Xubuntu, ...

Both these answers change the subject. Has anybody got a reasonable suggestion?

Maybe not. It is not easy to maintain a system after it's end of life. In this case the packages, that belong also to the server are still updated, but not those belonging to the desktop.

But I can guess that there is a hardware problem. Maybe a component is slowly getting bad, and starts slowly. What happens if you wait for 5 minutes without any live session, and then reboot?

You can make a soft reboot with the following hot-key combination:

System Request is often (but not always) on the same key as Print Screen, so press

alt + SysRq all the time and then press each of the following keys 1 second each one after another

    r e i s u b

    to reboot.

On laptops you may have to press the fn key as well to reach SysRq (which is on delete on my HP laptop). The proper sequence may be: Press alt, fn, SysRq; release fn; press r; release all; and then the same for the eisub.

It works for me to keep the SysRq key combination pressed all the time (but may be different on some computers).

I don't even have to let the live disk finish loading. I can restart half way through the process and my laptop then boots properly ??????????????
