    Used to be Windows Live (now Skype), but my friends barely use it now, so I use mostly Facebook chat nowadays when I happen to chat.

    Before I retired I used mostly IBM Sametime at work. Now that I am retired I use test messaging (SMS) on my phone.

    Use whatever OS or desktop works for you. Dual boot or use VMs if you want. Backup your computer regularly, and definitely before upgrading, partitioning, or installing an OS.

    No support requests by PM please.

    Most of the people I know use Facebook Chat, but I closed my account there a couple years ago, so I don't use IM apps as much as I used to. I still use Skype when gaming with friends on Steam, and on my phone I usually use Hangouts since the Skype app seems to absolutely murder the battery life on my Nexus 4.

    Re: Which is your main IM network?

    Yeah, I keep hearing the Skype app on mobile devices is killer on battery life. O: I've been wondering how good Google Hangouts are, but most people I know probably don't have a Google account, so no use in checking that out. ;w;

    Anyway, I'm using Skype 4.2, and Pidgin for Facebook chat, since all my friends are both on Skype and Facebook. They use Facebook for mobile chatting since the Skype app sucks.

    Also, I did give Jitsi a try as an alternative to Pidgin, but it's absolutely hideous in the sense that it doesn't conform to my desktop theme, or is themeable; so yeah, mostly visual complaints there. I think I'll stick to Pidgin. XD

    I started with either MSN/Windows Live or Yahoo Messenger (can't remember which, probably Yahoo, but I've used both), then Skype for a while about 6 years ago. These days it's mostly email, TXTs (SMS) or regular phone calls, with occasional chats via Facebook.

    My first networks were MSN, AIM and ICQ. I now tend to use Skype, Google Talk and Facebook chat on occasions these days. I go through phases of using IRC and sometimes use it religiously and at other points stop using it all together, although it is my preferred favorite.

    Due to recent privacy and security concerns I have tried to move to Jabber (xmpp) in order to have some more transparency (using a self hosted xmpp server). But friends and family are reluctant to move from Skype.

    IRC for GNU/Linux related talks. Skype for talking with work colleagues.
