    MySQL concurrencies

When running multiple users to a MySQL database, does the server handle the locks so that if 2 users are trying to inquire/update the same data only 1 can update and the other is refreshed with the updated data, or does the lock happen on the read? It's been YEARS since I used Oracle (ok, 2 decades!) and I just don't recall how such matters worked.
