    Nelson Mandela in Critical Condition

Thought this belonged here as Mandela has given speeches on the concept of Ubuntu a few times, and since Ubuntu derives it's name from this concept (humanism ideology) he relates closely to this distro. One of his speeches was even distributed with the distro at a different time.

Which is more important in obtaining the truth, "what" or "why"? Trick question. They are of equal importance.

Think this might be it for the old guy. He's lived an amazing life, he went from a terrorist/freedom fighter to a peacemaker, and was central in one of the biggest human rights turnarounds in recent history. To have managed South Africa's transition from an institutionally racist state to an inclusive (if shaky) democracy with minimal bloodshed is an amazing achievement. A name that will go down in history, for sure.

Yes, it's important for people to remember his life as a whole. I fear that the media have been rewritting history a little bit or at least avoiding talking about he and Winnies early years in order to paint a prettier picture. He's an old man now, so maybe it's time to put the past in the past though.

Most people don't know about that and it's never brought up in the media.

Yup, it is difficult to explain how one can possibly use 250,000 hand grenades for peaceful purposes. People got to remember that there were very good reasons why he spent 27 years behind bars. However, the whole saga is proof that some exceptional individuals really do reform while in jail.

His ex wife Winnie though, never reformed. She was a child murderer and is still a child murderer.

Being a South African myself all I can say is Madiba is legend. Things could have gone so wrong after 1994 but in part thanks to him it did not.

Having had the fortune of experiencing a relatively peaceful transition from a militant police state to a full blown democracy is in no way or form celebrating ignorance to the detriment of progress and liberty...
