    Unhappy Ubuntu server 12.04.02LTS amd64 does not route after libc6-dev update

    Hy there

    I have a Ubuntu server 12.04.02LTS amd64 box configured as a primary firewall and router.

    I have these network devices installed.

    eth0 -> WAN
    eth1 -> LAN, prerouting to the DMZ -> Web-, FTP-, Mailserver
    eth2 -> LAN, Kubuntu client
    wlan0 -> LAN, Mobile devices

    Everything was working fine, until yesterday morning.
    I did an update and following packets where installed.
    Code:
    linux-headers-3.2.0-40:amd64
    linux-headers-3.2.0-40-generic:amd64
    linux-image-3.2.0-40-generic:amd64

    Following packets where updated.
    Code:
    linux-generic:amd64 3.2.0.39.47 -> 3.2.0.40.48
    linux-headers-generic:amd64 3.2.0.39.47 -> 3.2.0.40.48
    linux-image-generic:amd64 3.2.0.39.47 -> 3.2.0.40.48
    linux-libc-dev:amd64 3.2.0-39.62 -> 3.2.0-40.64

    Since these updates, my router does not route traffic to the WAN.
    The "funny" thing is, that i can communicate from the LAN on eth2 to the DMZ on eth1 without any problems, except for encrypted connections via SSL or TSL(SSL/TSL
    shutdowns and failures).
    I also can do a ping from the LAN to the WAN successfully.
    When i try to do an update on the client on eth2, the GPG keys get an awnser, but the connection via http fails, same on eth1 for the DMZ.
    The router itself establishes connections on eth0 to the WAN.

    De facto i can not establish connections from the LAN via router to the WAN since yesterday morning.

    The iptables-rules have not been changed since yesterday morning, so i can confirm that these where working until the updates where installed.

    Is it possible that the libc-dev libaries collide with the iptables-rules/libaries?

    I do not know how to figure this one out...

    Are you sure it's a routing issue not a name resolution issue? can you ping external hosts via IP?

    Re: Ubuntu server 12.04.02LTS amd64 does not route after libc6-dev update

    Hy steeldriver

    Thank you for your reply!

    Yes i can ping external addresses from the LAN like
    Code:
    ping -c 5 google.com
    The name resolution is done and the ping is successfull.

    Today i did a look in the
    Code:
    /var/log/syslog
    After the new Kernel was installed there is shown a section that refers to the routing table. I can not remember the exact output at the moment. I will post it when i am at home in 2 hours.

    The curious thing is, that the server in the DMZ -served by iptables prerouting and forwarding from the router- is not affected with this issue.

    Only the LAN (including the WLAN) can not access the WAN but i am able to connect from the LAN to the server in the DMZ....

    EDIT

    1.)Here you find the syslog entry form the ROUTER, when the update was made. I tried to mark out some entries.

    Re: Ubuntu server 12.04.02LTS amd64 does not route after libc6-dev update

    SOLVED!!!
    Somehow the installation of the new kernel gave the MTU to 576. By changing it back to 1500 with
    Code:
    sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu 1500
    the router does the job as good as before the update

    Hy all.

    Found the bug which caused the MTU-setting.

    Just change a letter from t to e, and the problem is solved

    Thanks for posting the solution to this issue duesentriebchen. I was scratching my head for a day after a release update from 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS.

    Really frustrating little bug. I should buy you a beer.
