13.04 locks up randomly and becomes unresponsive

Ok, I recently "upgraded" to 13.04. The problem I have now is that the machine I have will randomly lock up and become unresponsive (not even the keyboard responds). Sometimes I have to re-boot a few times to "fix" it. I'm concerned that it's affecting my hard drive, or at the very minimum something is broken in the kernel. This same thing happened with 12.10, but I thought upgrading might fix it. This happens sometimes when I'm using FireFox, sometimes when I'm just trying to open FireFox, and other times just during general usage.

I'm still fairly new to Linux, so I don't know completely how to troubleshoot this. I'm with the whole thing.

But here's an example: I click on the icon for the dash (I think that's what it's called) and it seems like it struggles to pull that up. I did it earlier and the entire machine locked up on me, and the screen essentially turned from my standard desktop to having diagonal lines on it. Nothing worked except a soft reboot.

My machine specs are: AMD 1.8 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, 500GB HDD. It's a custom build, and I took the video and network cards out of an older machine.

Any type of advice anyone could give would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

I did do a search, and upon a cursory search, didn't find anything related to this and 13.04.

So if there's a command or something I can do to fix this, that would be stellar.

How does it work in a live boot of X/Lubuntu 13.04?

I don't know how to get it to do that. I'm still fairly new to Linux. I have a LONG way to go to get to the level of a lot of you guys.

I had this problem (though not to this extent) with 12.10, as well. I thought upgrading it to 13.04 might fix the problem, but it seems to have exacerbated it.

I think the next time it "locks" I may try to remote into it with NX client from my Windows machine, and see what happens.

Sidebar: When I remoted in earlier (machine wasn't locked then) I noticed that the chrome on my windows was not there, nor was Unity. Why would that be? I had a few icons on the desktop, but I couldn't access unity or anything from the "side" bar.

Re: 13.04 locks up randomly and becomes unresponsive

Ok, an update. I just went and installed the 3.8.3 kernel, along with Gnome 3.8, and I'm still having the same issue. In both Unity and Gnome.

Anyone, PLEASE have any suggestions on how to fix this? It's driving me crazy, and I'm afraid I'm going to damage my hard disk if this keeps happening.

I have a custom build, see original post for specs.

Any ideas at all on what I can check/change/install to fix this? I had the same problem with 12.10. I had hoped upgrading to 13.04 would fix it.

A live boot is running Buntu from USB or CD without installing.

    Please run
    Code:
    sudo lshw > lshw.txt
and post lshw.txt in CODE tags. Can be done from a live boot or from the installed system as you please.

Re: 13.04 locks up randomly and becomes unresponsive

Hardware is fine. I don't recognise the 1.8 GHz mentioned in the first post; you seem to have 2.7.

You have still not posted the result from the live boot, so we don't know if it is a problem related to 13.04 itself or to the installation. If the live boot works well my advice would be a fresh install of 13.04, 64 bit.
Bringing old hardware back to life. About problems due to upgrading.
