Windows 8, home built computer, won't show Ubuntu on boot menu

I built a machine couple of months ago, and decided to put Windows 8 on it. Although I love Windows 8, I want to try Ubuntu for a spin and see if I like it. So ... I have a 12.10 Ubuntu Disk my friend gave me (i figured I'd just upgrade to the latest once I boot into Ubuntu) and I installed it with no problem!

Until it restarts ... and it shows my OS and let's me choose which one ... and it's only Windows 8. I don't know what I need to do. I have tried again and again to reinstall the OS.

    Any suggestions?

JUst for your info, I have an AMD A8 3GHZ processor. 16GB of ram. All should work well with Linux.

    And for your viewing pleasure!

    Any suggestions?

    Just to be clear,

When you restart the computer, does a "new" screen (the grub prompt) appear with windows 8 as the ONLY option?

May I suggest you go the route of Boot-repair:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair
This might be the easiest solution, given it is a easy problem and NOT a UEFI problem and such.

Please see this link (also GRUB2 in my signature) for a whole document on grub and installing, and fixing it to boot OS's and other related things:

    Cheers and good luck

Switched away from windows XP to Ubuntu 9.04. Never turned around to look back.

Yes, that is exactly what happens. And okay, I'll try that.
