Xubuntu graphics not booting after update

I updated my system yesterday with sudo apt-get upgrade after doing sudo apt-get update. After I restarted the system loaded normally, showing the xubuntu load bar. It would then go black and say "stopping system V compatibility". I can still log into the console with ctrl-alt-f1, but if I do ctrl-alt-f7 it is just that black console screen aforementioned.
When I tried loading into a previous linux version, it would say it cannot connect to input device or graphics card and had to run in low graphics mode. However, with no way to click the low graphics mode button I could only do a console login.
I am on a wubi install under windows 7.

Thank you in advance for help!
