Trying to Dual Boot Win7 + Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, screwed up the boot menu

I have two main issues going on: one, I can't figure out the boot menu after trying to set up a dual boot; two, I want to know if I can still back up my Windows 7 OS.

    Okay, here's the background information...

My desktop computer (HP with some personal modifications like GPU and RAM) came pre-installed with Windows 7. I decided to take my laptop's HD which I had been using Ubuntu on for several months, and put that into my desktop. I searched around and felt confident enough to dual boot. I also backed up my data, but I forgot to back up the Windows 7 OS (I made a system image for the back up, but no recovery disks to be precise).

After moving my laptop's HD into my desktop, I couldn't get the two HDs to run together (only Ubuntu would boot even if I chose Windows from the boot menu in the BIOS). I decided to do a fresh Ubuntu install. I booted the computer using a USB drive that had Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and chose the option to install Ubuntu alongside Windows. It said it would delete the Ubuntu data and files that were already on the laptop HD and it wouldn't touch the Windows stuff on the other HD. I accepted, and midway through the installation process I got a message about a fatal error regarding a boot directory. I should've canceled, but I chose something along the lines of "/sdb" and then the name of the laptop HD (Hitachi something or other). The installation completes and I restart the computer, but then I am greeted by a grub console (which I hadn't seen before when using Ubuntu on my laptop). So I did more searching online, and I saw on these very forums something about the boot-repair application (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair). In order to use it I needed to boot from the USB drive again and "Try Ubuntu". I did just that and typed in the "sudo" commands as instructed in the boot-repair tutorial. Restarted the computer and got a different grub command line. This one was weird! It said something about "ELF magic arch," and then it said "grub rescue>".

So at this point I can only run the computer through the USB "Try Ubuntu" function. I can see all my files and stuff, even my Windows games like Starcraft II when I search through Ubuntu's file directory. I have my critical data backed up with a Windows 7 system image on an external HD, but I don't have any recovery disks for the Windows 7 OS. Is it possible to still back up Windows 7 and put it on recovery disks? And, what might be wrong with the boot loader?

I'm hessitant to try anything more right now because I feel like I'm in a delicate balance, but I'm also ignorant of this tech stuff. My hopes is somebody might recognize this issue and then I can provide more information regarding my computer and the error messages (I noticed a lot of talk about UEFI, but I don't know if my desktop has that).

Boot-Repair creates a BootInfo report. Post the link it gives you to the report.

Post the link to the BootInfo report that this creates. Is part of Boot-Repair:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Info
For info on UEFI boot install & repair:

Please use Thread Tools above first post to close thread when/if answered completely.

Here is the boot-info summary paste (I hope this is somehow readable, let me know again if it needs to be fixed, thank you):

    Code:

Re: Trying to Dual Boot Win7 + Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, screwed up the boot menu

I do not know how you posted, I occasionally copy from something not Ubuntu and it uses the wrong line endings. Post link it gives. Not download.

I got you link to work once but had to login to launchpad.
Second try at link said something about deep linking not allowed. So it is the direct download that is not allowed.

    Is this yours?
    http://paste.ubuntu.com/5772519/

That shows one drive as UEFI with gpt partitioning and the other BIOS with MBR partitioning.
You can only dual boot in that configuration by going into UEFI/BIOS and turn on UEFI to boot sda and turn off UEFI and turn on Legacy/CSM/BIOS to boot sdb.

To make it easy to dual boot you need to make both system UEFI. Boot-Repair can convert an Ubuntu install to UEFI but drive has to be gpt. There are tools to convert to gpt, but I have never done that and you would need good backups.

Yeah, that link is from one of the boot repair logs. Just to clarify about the linking, It is okay if I post the link to the boot info, but not the "download as text" link?

I'm waiting for some Windows 7 recovery disks right now to restore the W7 bootloader, but after that I think I'll give this a try. I did a Google search and found a tool called "Gptgen." Do you think that might work? I have most my stuff backed up, and I have a system image file backup for Windows 7.

At any rate, I think this issue is solved for now. After I try to convert the Ubuntu install drive to GPT I'll post back here if I have any issues. Thank you for your help.

Re: Trying to Dual Boot Win7 + Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, screwed up the boot menu

Boot-Repair can reinstall a Windows work alike into the MBR to boot Windows. If UEFI you should just be able to choose the Windows boot file in the efi partition. Both Windows & Ubuntu exist in the same efi partition.

If Windows 7 but UEFI you need a recovery flash drive more like the Windows 8 version.

Make your own Windows repairCD (not vendor recovery):

    I would suggest this:
    Converting to or from GPT
    http://www.rodsbooks.com/gdisk/mbr2gpt.html
You then need to use gdisk to convert from gpt to MBR
