Shift & CTRL keys to select multi files

I am running 12.04 on a Dell laptop. I use the shift and control keys quite a bit to help select more than one file. This worked fine for months, but after a kernel update, they stopped working. Another kernel update and they worked again. Another update and now they are not working again. I really don't want to use older kernels if I don't have to since the update must be fixing other things. Is there a way to fix this ?

very strange thing; meaning that the kernel is not using the good keyboard driver. You should google around the threads talking about linux+thatkeyboardmodel; maybe the Dell subforum is a better place to get help.
