Mouse, touchpad, and trackpoint, have lives of their own

I have a T400 Thinkpad that I would like to either dual boot with Windows 7, or use with just Xubuntu or Ubuntu, 12.04 or 13.04.

I have tried all three, and Windows installs and works fine. The U/Xubuntu installs (32 or 64-bit), however, have a problem with the pointing devices. The installs go fine, but, sometime shortly after updating and setting up them up, the pointing devices start wandering off, skipping, lagging, etc.

If you reboot, they're OK for a short while, but, then start misbehaving again. I've tried installs without the mouse attached, turning off the touchpad and trackpoint, and using just the mouse, but nothing seems to work, nor have I found by searching online, any mention of a similar problem reported by someone else.

Help, advice, or even a nudge in the right direction to solve this, would be highly appreciated.
