Hello all,

Kind of a general question here... I've got a Lenovo T530 laptop that I've ran a handful of different distros on, and I'm kind of curious as to why the Fn keys and brightness control works almost flawlessly on some (Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04 - everything worked except activating the webcam from the Fn keys), and others that would seem to be closely related have various issues with the same (Xubuntu 13.04 - neither of the Fn keys for sleep (F4) or lock screen (F3) worked, Mint 15 - the Fn keys (F8/F9) for brightness don't work). To be fair, in the case of Mint 15, I can't control the screen brightness at all, even with the panel applet.

What kind of secret sauce does mainline Ubuntu have that the hardware Fn keys and brightness controls work flawlessly out of the box and its close kin (Xubuntu and Mint) do not?
