Disk full during heavy computation, cannot find archive

I am running some calculations but cannot terminate them since my harddisk runs full. 1st question is why? Likely this is some temporary archive. How can I avoid this?
and how can I find these large archives, recently created, such that I can delete them?

Detail: I am running a phylogeny with bootstraps that should take about 20 days but generates archive of over 300 gb in two days
