A new project will start with another name and more features
More news will be posted at https://facebook.com/163520440489115 , the page will be renamed and a new project will be registered at Sourceforge. Ubuntu MATE main project will be updated with details about the new project.
    Thanks.
Wait 25 minutes, the 1.0.1 version will be online (my internet is slow :/ )

    Description

Ubuntu MATE is simple and flexible. You can enjoy a desktop environment that is lightweight and familiar, especially if you used Ubuntu versions under 10.10.
It's based on Ubuntu latest LTS release, so you will have a very stable experience, compatible with older and newer hardware.
MATE desktop environment is lightweight and should work fine even with no 3D graphics card and lower RAM and processor specifications.
Ubuntu MATE brings the stability of Ubuntu 12.04 plus the interface you're used to. So, you don't need to be stuck at 10.04

    Features

    • MATE as default desktop environment (+ Caja, Atril, MATE Terminal and other forks by MATE Desktop developers)
    • Stable, fast and easy to use desktop environment
    • Comes with some extra themes
    • Stable operating system, based on Ubuntu latest LTS (Long Term Support) release.
    • Use MDM as login manager, it's easily customizable and fully compatible with MATE.
    • Comes with VLC as default video player, Exaile as default audio player, Synaptic instead of Ubuntu Software Centre, Pidgin instead of Empathy...
    • You don't need to relearn how to use your desktop after every single release.
    • Desktop is clean and you can change it the way you want.
    • Can run on older hardware and at computers with low specs.
    • And more.

    Minimal hardware requirements

    At least 384MB of RAM
At least 8GB of Hard Disk Storage Space
700 MHz processor (about Intel Celeron or better)
VGA capable of 800x600 screen resolution
DVD Drive (don't tested USB boot)
Internet Connection is helpful if you want to install other languages.

    Re: Presenting Ubuntu MATE!

    Hi,
I don't want to rain on your parade, but have you looked here: http://www.canonical.com/intellectual-property-policy I don't think you can call it Ubuntu Mate.
an extract that I think applies ...
"You can redistribute Ubuntu, but only where there has been no modification to it.

You can redistribute Ubuntu in its unmodified form, complete with the installer images and packages provided by Canonical (this includes the publication or launch of virtual machine images).

Any redistribution of modified versions of Ubuntu must be approved, certified or provided by Canonical if you are going to associate it with the Trademarks. Otherwise you must remove and replace the Trademarks and will need to recompile the source code to create your own binaries. This does not affect your rights under any open source licence applicable to any of the components of Ubuntu. If you need us to approve, certify or provide modified versions for redistribution you will require a licence agreement from Canonical, for which you may be required to pay. For further information, please contact us (as set out below).

We do not recommend using modified versions of Ubuntu which are not modified in accordance with this IPRights Policy. Modified versions may be corrupted and users of such modified systems or images may find them to be inconsistent with the updates published by Canonical to its users. If they use the Trademarks, they are in contravention of this IPRights Policy. Canonical cannot guarantee the performance of such modified versions. Canonical’s updates will be consistent with every version of Ubuntu approved, certified or provided by Canonical."

Yeppers. Only Canonical can tag a distro with the Ubuntu name.

Re: Presenting a Ubuntu-based distro with MATE desktop

How is it different from Mint with Mate? Sorry, can't get excited about it. Mate is a zombie DE as gtk2 is legacy. If you can't live without the "classic" desktop experience there are many alternatives still under active development.(lxde, xfce, cinnamon, gnome fallback(?) and to some extent KDE,--which is more modern than the others )

Any branding in the GUI will have to be changed as Pinguy OS and other Ubuntu spin-offs have done .

Re: Presenting a Ubuntu-based distro with MATE desktop

I'm not the legal expert here, re. trademarks, copyrights, etc., but couldn't you just forget doing an entire distro and release Mate as just a desktop manager / DE option for adding, selecting use of, etc.? Like when someone installs Gnome into a Kubuntu OS?

It already is available for Ubuntu. He wants an installer that uses it as default (along with gdebi, which is in the Ubuntu repos but not installed by default, and MDM, the Mint Display Manager.)
