Does facebook help cope with loneliness ?

    Hi,

I moved from my old home 10 years back & I use facebook to keep in touch with my old friends belonging to my old locality only.

I have only 18 friends in my friends list.

Surprisingly I don't remember the names of any of my school or college friends leaving only a few.

Most of the guys I have in my friends list have moved away abroad due to job related reasons.

I am unemployed at the moment & a bachelor so I feel bored & often try to cope with loneliness by visiting facebook.

But frankly its not that effective.

How extensively do you use facebook ?

How many friends do you have ?

How many friends are strangers ?

How often do you chat on facebook ?

It's great that you can still use Facebook to stay in touch with distant friends and family. ^^ I may eventually do the same too, since not everyone I know can be bothered to get Skype, or use it regularly anyway.

I only got a Facebook in the first place because my best friend wanted me to, though, (Skype on Mobile sucks, so my friend prefers typing on Facebook chat instead while on the go, since it's much better.) and I added close to a dozen other friends through my Skype contacts, so that was a secondary benefit. I wouldn't have bothered with Facebook if not for friends, otherwise Skype, Tumblr, Twitter, and deviantART were doing me just fine.

I don't even add strangers to my Facebook friends list at all, but I do let them follow me or like my page, at least. I'm just not comfortable with the thought of adding a stranger, just to remove them or block them later if they talk about, or share things on their wall, that make me sick to my stomach. (Hentai, porn, real-life gore, etc.) The risk of NSFW content is not worth it for me. Although I'm an adult now, all of that in parentheses still disturbs me rather deeply.

I have around 400 friends on facebook. I do know them all but its not like I speak to 400 people on a daily basis. We just keep in touch now and then.
I do dislike FB though, but I guess I'm stuck with using it since everyone I know use it. Kind of like my story with WLM lol.

Facebook, like so many other things is a tool IMO. It is a great way to keep in touch with people that are far away. If you are lonely get out and do things, you will meet people
