Should be ok. I run Ubuntu on an Atom-powered netbook that has 1GB RAM, and it's fine. If you want the regular Ubuntu desktop I'd suggest downloading the LTS version (12.04) and using the Unity 2D option from the login screen (click the icon next to your user name).
Alternatively you could try out one of the lighter alternative desktops such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu.
I'd say download them all, stick them on a USB stick or CD and give them a test run to see which you like.
Assuming that you actually mean 1GB and not 1MB then Lubuntu or Xubuntu will be fine on a machine with those specs.

i'd suggest Lubuntu for that old dell.
unity or gnome-shell would probably not be a very pleasant experience on there.
however, lubuntu with the lightweight lxde environment will run great!
+1 for lubuntu on an old machine. I set up lubuntu on a friend's old lappie. She loves it, says it is so much quicker than XP. I know it runs nice because sometimes I have to show her how to do some things since she is completely new to linux. Her old machine has new life.
Multi-boot: Arch linux, Ubuntu 12.04, Windows 7 & Windows 8
thanks
i went with the 32 bit ubuntu for the old machine
so far it runs good
