    Removing Nautilus Bookmarks

I have no use for some of the default folders in my home directory. Such as 'Downloads', 'Public' etc. I've found that your supposed to edit the ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs file. I've deleted the folder and removed their entries in the dirs file but upon running 'xdg-user-dirs-update' The folder and dirs entry are back. How do I remove the folders and bookmarks?

I presume that is the exact purpose of that command. What happens if you do not run the command?
